In 1994, Kiwanis International made a promise to the world's children: Kiwanis and its Kiwanis family will raise $75 million to virtually eliminate the world's most prevalent, preventable cause of mental retardation, iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). The successful completion of this mission will rank as one of mankind's greatest health-related achievements during the 20th century. More than 1.5 billion children and adults will be saved from disorders that include stillbirths, cretinism, and goiter, as well as diminished academic performance and productivity.

Our Kiwanis International service projects:

The most significant work that any Kiwanis club can do is work with children. We are fortunate to work with children from the elementary school level all the way to college. Through Kiwanis International affiliated programs, we sponsor five local Key clubs on the high school level and the Circle K Club at USC.

Our local service projects:

We sponsor a residence cottage at Carolina Children's Home, which is a home of 9-15 year old boys. Through our fundraising we have equipped the cottage with furniture, a TV and VCR, books and sporting equipment, and gift certificates for each boy's birthday. We also provide pit crew and financial support for the Children's Home's soapbox derby car which races each year in the Columbia races held in June.

We also participate in the Children's Miracle Network telethon each year, and present awards at the annual Richland One middle school track meet.
